Corrugated boxes are made up of a liner and a medium. These sheets of paper are glued together, typically comprising three fiberboard layers, but can be even thicker.

The Linerboard: The outer flat material found on the outside of the board, providing strength and protection.
The Medium (Flute): The wavy layer in the middle. This provides the structural strength, acting as a cushion and making it ideal for shipping and storage.

Corrugated material is available in different wall thicknesses, known as flute sizes. On end, flutes form rigid columns capable of supporting significant weight, while from the side, they act as an insulator and cushion to protect contents from impact and temperature changes.
